What are the benefits of upgrading the axle-back on a 2005 and later Mustang?
The main benefit of upgrading the axle-back is improving the exhaust note of your Mustang. The stock axle-back flows fairly well so horsepower improvements are usually modest after installing an aftermarket system. However, the improvement in sound cannot be understated, plus the exhaust tips on aftermarket axle-backs are a big improvement over stock.
What are the differences between an axle-back and a cat-back on 2005 and later Mustangs?
On 2005 and later Mustangs, Ford divided the cat-back into over-the-axle pipes and the axle-back section. The axle-back consists of the mufflers and exhaust tips. That means that when you purchase a cat-back, you are essentially getting an axle-back and the over-the-axle pipes that connect the axle-back to the mid-pipe.
What are the different materials used on Mustang axle-backs?
  • 304 Stainless Steel: High chromium content stainless steel. This is a top grade material used to make exhaust components. Because of its high chromium content, it can be polished to a mirror finish and has superior anti-corrosive properties.
  • 409 Stainless Steel: Titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel. This is a mid-grade material used to make exhaust components. In fact, the factory stock exhaust system is made of 409 stainless steel. While 409 makes a good material for exhaust components, with time it can develop a layer of surface rust, but it will never rust through.
  • Aluminized Steel: Carbon steel with an aluminum chemical coating applied to inhibit rust. This is the most economical material used for exhaust components. Under normal conditions aluminized steel will hold up well, but surface scrapes can remove the aluminized coating and allow rust to develop on the base carbon steel. Aluminized steel does not hold up well in places with corrosive elements in the environment, such as road salt.
Are Mustang axle-backs emissions legal?
Mustang axle-backs do not affect the function of the factory catalytic converters or any other emissions related parts, so all axle-back kits are 50-state emissions legal. Please note that some axle-back kits are very loud and therefor not noise legal, but this is different from being emissions legal.
